As part of our Port of Brisbane Land Cover Transformation program, Senior Geography students have been in the thick of the mud and mangroves of Whyte Island to undertake valuable data collection and observe changes at this intersection of industry and nature.
Students collect primary data using ArcGIS Survey123 to investigate land cover change and ecosystem health. The program provides valuable opportunities for students to apply classroom learning in a real-world context while developing fieldwork and analytical skills required for senior Geography.
Connecting students with industry experts from the Port of Brisbane provides an insight to how environmental management practices and sustainable development is prioritised to balance economic growth with environmental conservation.
Through this authentic, place-based learning experience, students deepen their understanding of the dynamic relationship between people, environment and place across the Moreton Bay region.
