Moreton Bay Environmental Education Centre is proud to work alongside respected cultural partners to strengthen understanding, connection and capability across our education community. Through meaningful collaborations with Aunty Becky Thomson OAM, Yura Consultancy (Aunty Merle and Kaitlin Lee), Aunty Sharron mirri Bell, and Quandamooka Cultural Officer Matt Burns, the Centre supports educators to deepen their knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures and perspectives in authentic, place-based ways.

These partnerships enable Moreton Bay EEC to offer high-quality professional development experiences for state school staff, early childhood educators and community organisations. Facilitated on Country and guided by cultural knowledge holders, these sessions provide safe, reflective spaces for educators to build cultural capability, ask questions, and explore practical, respectful ways to embed Indigenous perspectives into their daily teaching and learning environments.

Professional learning events have included:

  • Cultural immersion walks
  • Workshops on local stories and language
  • Guided discussions on culturally responsive pedagogy
  • Opportunities for educators to connect with Country through ceremony, art and storytelling

By grounding professional development in lived cultural knowledge, our partners ensure that learning is not only informative but transformative - supporting educators to develop confidence, respect and a stronger sense of responsibility when working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and communities.

One of the key strengths of these professional learning experiences is the focus on supporting educators to confidently integrate culturally informed practices into schools, Early Learning Centres and the classroom for all children. Participants leave with tangible strategies - such as incorporating local stories and language, embedding cultural protocols, and weaving Country and place-based learning into curriculum areas - that enrich learning for every student. These approaches help create inclusive, respectful environments where children grow in cultural understanding, empathy and connection to place.

Through these ongoing relationships, Moreton Bay EEC continues to strengthen its commitment to reconciliation, truth-telling and culturally informed practice. We are honoured to learn from and walk alongside our cultural partners, and to support educators across the region to engage in meaningful, respectful and impactful professional growth.
