Moreton Bay EEC provides the perfect backdrop for inspiration. We recently welcomed students from our WMsea Cluster schools (Gumdale, Lota, Manly, Manly West, Tingalpa, Wondall Heights, Wynnum and Wynnum West State Schools) and Rochedale State School to our Young Writers Program, led by acclaimed author and illustrator Gregg Dreise. The program brought together budding writers to explore how every voice, idea and imagination contributes to a rich and powerful chorus of storytelling.
Gregg Dreise, a proud Kamilaroi and Euahlayi man, is widely recognised for his engaging children's books that weave together First Nations perspectives, humour, and powerful life lessons. Drawing on his experience as an author, artist, and educator, Gregg guided students through the writing process, encouraging them to find their voice and develop stories that reflect both imagination and meaning.
Aligned with the 2026 Children's Book Week theme, “Symphony of Stories," the workshop invited students to consider how stories can come together like music - layered, expressive, and uniquely personal. Through activities and targeted writing exercises, students developed their skills in crafting ideas, building characters and bringing stories to life.
Students have been immersed in crafting their short stories, progressing through drafting, editing, formatting and proofreading - just like all emerging authors. Their completed works will then be compiled into a book. The program will culminate in a special book launch, where students will be able to share and celebrate their writing with peers, teachers and the wider community.
Moreton Bay EEC extends its sincere thanks to Gregg for his time, generosity, and expertise. His ability to inspire and empower the young writers made this program a memorable and meaningful experience for all involved.
