National Sorry Day is observed annually on 26 May, the date a report entitled Bringing Them Home was tabled in Australian Parliament.
National Sorry Day, also known as the National Day of Healing, is dedicated to remembering and acknowledging the mistreatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who were forcibly removed from their families and communities.
This day encourages us to reflect on the historical injustices faced by these communities, particularly the profound grief and loss endured by the Stolen Generations. It also emphasises the role each of us can play in the healing process.
This day also honours the strength and resilience of the Stolen Generations survivors and is observed by Australians nationwide.
On Friday, we attended the National Sorry Day Commemoration Ceremony hosted by the Winnam Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders Corporation to reflect on our collective role in the healing journey.
