Young writers from Tingalpa SS, Wondall Heights SS, Wynnum SS, Gumdale SS, Wynnum West SS, and Manly SS recently embarked on an inspiring two-day writing adventure as part of the Young Writers Program. This exciting enrichment opportunity encourages students to connect with a sense of place while honing their storytelling skills under the guidance of a professional author.
This year's program featured a visit to Brisbane's historic Newstead House, the city's oldest surviving residence. Students immersed themselves in its rich history, engaging in a “theatre-in-education" experience with actor Matt Butler, who brought Mr. George Harris, one of the home's original owners, to life. Exploring the house and its many artefacts, students sparked their imaginations by envisioning the untold stories these objects might share.
Day two welcomed Gregg Dreise, a multi-award-winning children's author and artist, who captivated students with his engaging storytelling, cultural insights, and tips for budding writers. Gregg spoke of comedy being the hardest genre to write, however through his guidance, students learned valuable tools for crafting compelling narratives, with laughter and creativity flowing freely.
Now, these young authors are hard at work finalising their imaginative short stories, inspired by the experiences and lessons of the program. The Young Writers Program remains an invaluable opportunity for schools seeking to enrich and extend their students' creative potential.
