What better way to understand the essential components of a story than being immersed and part of the story? Our Young Writers Program has two essential components that extend and challenge students to create and write engaging texts.
Indooroopilly State School students from years three, four and five joined us on our two day Young Writers Program in November. Day one began with a provocation and an immersion in Museum Theatre in partnership with Queensland Parks and Wildlife Services at Fort Lytton National Park. “Fort Lytton NP is closing – we have received the directive!" ….and so the story began. Across the day students were challenged to work as young historians to connect to the history, artefacts and place of Fort Lytton NP. They were in fact responsible for preserving the memories of this special place in light of developing events. The young writers were busy taking notes, advocating and lobbying for the correct outcome of preservation of significant and historical places.
Day two was spent with the amazingly talented and multi award-winning children's author Aleesah Darlison. Aleesah fluently guided students through the essential elements of the writing process to develop and create a short story connecting to their immersive experience. Supremely skilled in her craft, Aleesah extended students thinking to produce rich sensory writing pieces while supporting each other as writers and editors.
We are looking forward to reading the successful short stories written by the students.
