Moreton Bay EEC was excited to welcome members of the Royal Geographical Society of Queensland (RGSQ) for an immersive experience exploring Quandamooka Country through the eyes of students.
The day began at our Centre with connection to place, "Winnam – Place of Pandanus," where participants investigated local plants, including the iconic Pandanus Palm, and their various uses. After a refreshing morning tea, the group boarded the vessel Inspiration at William Gunn Jetty for hands-on learning about marine ecosystems.
Onboard, the geographers collected data on marine plastics by observing abiotic factors and conducting a plankton trawl to gather samples. This activity highlighted the impact of microplastics on plankton, essential organisms at the base of the marine food web, fostering a deeper understanding of the environmental challenges facing our oceans.
This collaboration strengthens the bond between Moreton Bay EEC and RGSQ, united in a mission to raise awareness about geographical and environmental issues. Together, we are empowering communities to care for Moreton Bay's ecosystems, ensuring they remain vibrant and resilient for future generations.
