Overboard and Underwater is a full-day program centered around the United Nations Global Sustainable Development Goal 14: Conserve and sustainably use the world’s oceans, seas and marine resources. Working in the role of Environmental Managers this program also has students collecting valuable citizen scientist data on marine debris in Moreton Bay (Quandamooka).
On the Manly foreshore the Environmental Managers observe and survey local land use, track movement of rubbish and debris through the environment, and annotate maps to record findings. They conduct a rubbish audit alongside the Moreton Bay Marine Park, applying the Tangaroa Blue methodology to identify, categorise, and record waste items using ArcGIS Survey 123.
They then board Inspiration, our research vessel, to explore the waters of a marine environment. Using scientific sampling methods including use of a sediment grab, they collect data on benthic microorganisms and microplastics. By the end of the day, students evaluate their findings and recommend environmental management strategies to reduce marine pollution.
