Organising Organisms is a full-day program in which students adopt the role of Ecologists to investigate the interactions of animals and plants of two different ecosystems, St Helena Island and Moreton Bay (Quandamooka). On board our vessel Inspiration, the students use microscopes to identify the observable features of different planktonic organisms captured through a plankton trawl. They use their findings and iPad resources to identify and create a dichotomous key to organise this diverse group of organisms. On St Helena Island, students use binoculars and iPads to identify plants and animals to create a food web. They apply their understanding of food webs to identify possible imbalances in the island ecosystem and develop and evaluate management strategies to manage the impacts.
