In this program, students step into the role of Environmental Managers to investigate how marine environments support both people and other living things. Through hands-on activities, they explore the unique ecosystems of Moreton Bay (Quandamooka), gather and analyse data, and propose practical actions for sustainable resource use.
The day begins on the Manly foreshore, where the students observe local land use, track movement of rubbish and debris through the environment, and annotate maps to record findings. They then board Inspiration, our research vessel, to explore the waters of the marine environment. Using scientific sampling methods, such as a sediment grab or plankton trawl, they collect data on benthic microorganisms, plankton, and microplastics.
As Environmental Managers, students conduct a rubbish audit alongside the Moreton Bay Marine Park, applying the Tangaroa Blue methodology - the national standard for marine debris surveys - to identify, categorise, and record waste items. By working as citizen scientists and using specialised equipment, students see firsthand how scientific data is used to identify environmental issues and inform decision-making.
At the end of the day,
students evaluate their findings and recommend environmental management
strategies to reduce marine debris, considering the potential impact of their
proposed actions.
