STEM Horizons
The Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Horizons program for high achievers is the perfect opportunity to extend science learning beyond the classroom. Students complete 4 days of specialist activities at a range of locations including Moreton Bay Environmental Education Centre. Activities are designed to be hands-on and link to authentic real-world science to further engage students in STEM and discover future careers. Students work in small groups alongside similarly interested peers from other schools. Schools are able to nominate students through an online registration process. On board Inspiration in Moreton Bay, students investigate fish stocks, plankton, sea grass and the sea floor using baited remote underwater video technology, plankton nets and microscopes, video gliders, benthic sediment grabs and a secchi disc to measure turbidity. Students work alongside guest scientists to explore Moreton Bay.
Young Writers
The Young Writer’s workshop is an exciting enrichment opportunity for students. Popular children’s author, Samantha Wheeler, conducts a three day program in conjunction with Moreton Bay Environmental Education Centre. Sam's book, 'Mister Cassowary', was one of six books (out of 100's) to be shortlisted in the Readings Children's Book Prize 2016. Sam's latest book, 'Everything I've Never Said', was listed as a CBCA Notable Book for 2019. The program is designed to extend and challenge young writers by developing their skills and ability to write, edit and produce creative and engaging texts, aligned with an Eco theme.
Young Leaders
Great leaders know where they are and know where they are going. They support the individuals they lead, are able to solve problems and delegate and adapt their leadership style to suit the context they lead in. The Moreton Bay 'Young Leaders' program provides opportunities for students to learn about the qualities of great leaders and develop the skills required to work effectively in teams, practice digital navigations skills, collaborate with others in planning and solve problems. Additional focus includes presentation skills when addressing audiences.
Solid Pathways
Solid Pathways is a unique, academic extension program that supports high achieving Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. The program aims to assist students in continuing their academic success from Year 4 to Year 12 through the acquisition of higher order thinking skills. Students are invited to participate in culturally inclusive web-conference lessons designed to develop their capability in critical and creative thinking. The students will then have the opportunity to engage in year level appropriate face to face programs, camps and extension activities that include working with Moreton Bay EEC. Programs align with the Australian Curriculum and expand on material taught to students in their online lessons.
Duke of Edinburgh
The Duke of Edinburgh Award is an international program that invites all young people between the ages of 14 to 25 to participate in a number of activities over a set length of time. Participation is voluntary and is structured so participants can design their own unique program centred on their interests and passions. This self-development program has been equipping, empowering, connecting and transforming young people in Australia over the past 50 years. Each year, The Duke of Ed in Australia has over 35,000 young Australians taking part in this unique self-development program. Each participant can challenge themselves to achieve the unthinkable and push their own boundaries. Our Awardees emerge from The Duke of Ed program as confident young people with community awareness on both a local and global level. Moreton Bay EEC can facilitate Duke of Ed programs in and around our centre as well as on board our vessel, Inspiration.
Environmental groups
Schools are welcome to use Moreton Bay EEC facilities as part of their studies in various environmental leadership groups. Moreton Bay EEC staff inspire students to care for our unique environments, promote sustainable futures and become champions of the Bay.
NAIDOC Week
NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. NAIDOC stands for ‘National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee’ with the acronym also being the name of the week itself. NAIDOC is celebrated not only in Indigenous communities, but by Australians from all walks of life. Moreton Bay EEC are active participants in NAIDOC Week with indigenous guests speakers and activities organised in and around the centre.
