The Minibeasts program allows students to investigate and identify living things in a garden habitat. During this session, students will determine how the survival needs of different plants and animals are met. They use this knowledge as they take on the role of an entomologist. Entomology is the branch of zoology dealing with the scientific study of insects.
During an exploration of the gardens in their school, students are introduced to the concept of a habitat. The exploration involves students working in groups, using nets and bug catchers to discover insects. Students will work in small teams to examine external features of various living things under a microscope. Identification charts, used to identify organisms, will assist with sketching and labelling.
Finally, relating this concept of a habitat to their own lives, students gain an understanding of the importance of respecting all living things. With this knowledge that habitats are shared by a number of different living things students develop an appreciation for caring for the environment and are inspired to be “Champions for the Bay”.
