Living by the Bay is a full-day program which immerses students in a sensory exploration of Moreton Bay. Prior to the program Moreton Bay Environmental Education Centre (MBEEC) teachers meet the Super Scientists to excite their interest and enhance their awareness of the range of senses through which they can explore and learn about their environment.
The program day commences with a training session at MBEEC. The Super Scientists become familiar with new scientific language and activate their senses through a series of sensory based activities.
Once their training is complete the Super Scientists put their new skills into practice by venturing out onto the Wynnum foreshore to explore, observe and identify living and non-living things within the intertidal zone. During the training and foreshore exploration the Super Scientists gain hands-on experience in the use of microscopes, eyeloupes (magic eyes), sensory trays, smelling plants and audio material.
The program concludes with a reflection on the needs of living things and discussions around care of habitats. The Super Scientists, as a result of their training and field work are recognised as being ‘Champions for the Bay’.

Nature and development of science
Science involves observing, asking questions about, and describing changes in, objects and events (ACSHE013)
Planning and conducting
Participate in guided investigations and make observations using the Science involves exploring and observing the world using the senses (ACSIS011)

Cross curriculum priorities
The biosphere is a dynamic system providing conditions that sustain life on Earth
Actions for a more sustainable future reflect values of care, respect and responsibility, and require us to explore and understand environments
Literacy- understand learning area vocabulary, use language to interact with others
Ethical behavior- act in regard for the environment and its wildlife, identify and clarify information and ideas
Personal and social capability- develop a sense of self, communicate effectively, and work collaboratively
