Add an Environmental Education Centre committed to Inspiring Champions for the Bay; with a talented and awarded Australians children’s author; and expose the designed product to students. The results are outstanding for students.
MBEEC teamed up with Aleesah Darlison for Young Writers Workshops to support Years 7 and 8 students in developing extraordinary stories. Designed as an extended activity, students from Mt Gravatt SHS, Brisbane Bayside State College and Wynnum State High School, spent significant time with Aleesah and out in the environment on beautiful Moreton Bay with MBEEC staff.
Budding student authors examined the plot, participated in a range of stimulus activities, and began to review possible characters in their short story. They discussed only having enough time to cover one problem with the arc of the story, rising tension, climax, hints and twists being explored. Eco themes were used as the basis for the plots, and of course Moreton Bay EEC are in the perfect position to assist with these.
Students spent time out on Moreton Bay on-board the vessel, Inspiration. A sensory challenge enabled students to explore how many descriptions of sensory experiences they were able to list. This was followed by a strong verb challenge and discussion about the health of the Bay and wildlife facilitated by our staff. A short break on St Helena’s jetty inspired further ideas and story lines.
Putting all of the pieces together, fleshing out characters and discussing the story plans with Aleesah for her expert advice was the final day. The student’s teachers are currently facilitating the draft process before the short stories undergo editing and publishing.
Stay tuned for book launches later in 2018 where a culminating event will see students celebrate their achievements as they receive a bound book containing all student stories.
