Ever passionate and committed founder, Ian Thomson from Ocean Crusaders, aimed to gather like-minded people for a morning of taking action cleaning up whilst having fun on beautiful Green Island. The Moreton Bay EEC team were proud to be part of this event. Fifty-three excited volunteers joined us on-board Inspiration, with more joining other vessels, to total 173 passionate citizens for a day of making a difference. This was an Ocean Crusader event supported by Port of Brisbane Pty Ltd, Bayside Creeks Catchment Group, Sea World Research and Rescue, MP Environmental Divers and Joan Pease MP.
The aim was to cover as much of the Island as possible with the entire circumference being cleaned. Next year the clean-up should be reduced with the groups hopefully only cleaning new rubbish and old nets from the flats that get exposed at low tide. Together, 646kg of debris was removed which included 6 tyres, 80 shoes, 247 lids, 792 polystyrene items and 2046 beverage containers. This is a huge number, but less than half of the total weight from the 2018 Clean Up Green Island event. Less plastic bags were collected showing fantastic results for the new plastic bag ban.
Remember it is best to REFUSE plastic before we even consider REDUCE, REUSE and RECYCLE. Heartfelt thanks to Ian (Ocean Crusader guru), his team and all participating groups. Together, we can make a difference.
