The Office of Resource Recovery in the Department of Environment and Science is currently developing a Sustainability School-based Education Strategy that will link to the Australian Curriculum. This strategy aims to promote understanding about sustainability, waste and resource recovery concepts and issues, as well as encourage behaviour change in school-aged children. Important to this strategy will be support, professional development and training of teaching staff.
Di Aylward and Erin van der Wyk from Moreton Bay Environmental Education Centre are pleased to be part of the Advisory Committee. The passion and commitment of all involved in the first workshop was amazing. An understanding of the learning and operating environment that occurs within the cycle of the school calendar and the decision-making nature of schools will be considered in the strategy. It is certainly acknowledged the importance of local and regional collaboration. We are looking forward to the next session and ongoing development of this initiative.
