World Environment Day with Moreton Bay EEC

It was a wonderful World Environment Day for MBEEC on the Bay. This year’s theme for World Environment Day was #BeatPlasticPollution. Every minute one garbage truck of plastic is dumped into our oceans. Moreton Bay EEC celebrated with professional development onboard Inspiration which involved an afternoon cruise for teachers from our cluster and client schools.
We trawled for plankton, studied findings under microscopes to spot microplastics in the water column, and discussed its impact on the marine ecosystem. The afternoon, completed with a delicious sustainable food platter (all locally grown, and thoughtfully packaged), also involved a very competitive trivia competition. All prizes were alternatives to plastics and included wooden toothbrushes, cotton produce bags and beeswax wraps. Forty percent of plastic is used once and thrown away, and items like plastic water bottles, toothbrushes and cigarette butts take over 500 years to break down… More than five human lifetimes!
The afternoon of education was a massive success thanks to Erin van der Wyk and the entire MBEEC team. All involved vowed to lessen their impact on marine plastic pollution by taking small, simple steps to reduce plastic use and become Champions for the Bay. Remember – if you can’t Reuse, Refuse!
