WMsea Young Writers Book Launch

Add a dedicated cluster of primary schools, an Environmental Education Centre committed to ‘inspiring champions for the bay’, a talented and awarded Australian children’s author, together with a remarkable group of students, and the results are outstanding.
Moreton Bay Environmental Education Centre (MBEEC) were proud to team up with Samantha Wheeler for a Young Writers Workshop with eight primary schools from the Wynnum Manly school education alliance. Designed as an extended activity over three days, students spent significant time out in the environment on beautiful Moreton Bay with Sam and MBEEC staff.
Budding student authors examined plot, participated in a range of stimulating activities, reviewed characters and chose settings. They discussed covering one problem with the arc of the story, rising tension, climax, hints and twists to be being explored. Eco themes were used as the basis for student plots. Students spent time on Moreton Bay where sensory challenges enabled them to explore different ways to describe sensory experiences. A discussion about the health of the Bay and wildlife along with a short break on St Helena’s jetty inspired further ideas and story lines.
Under Sam’s guidance, students put their stories together, fleshing out characters and designing their story plans. Classroom teachers facilitated the final drafts before Lilly Pilly Publishing weaved their magic to produce the published books.
The book launch at Wondall Heights State School on Monday 6th December was attended by the principals, teachers and parents to celebrate the release of student stories about nature that are wild, sometimes scary, but above all meaningful.
